Bucharest, which means city of joy, located in the southeast, is the largest and capital municipality of Romania. It is the biggest populated area with more than 1.7 million people. This is the key place for culture, industry, finance and transport of the country. This place is crowded with people but still it maintains its charm.
Getting around Bucharest is easy since it is the center transport area and has the most intensive transport system in the whole of Romania and even the whole of Europe. While getting around in Bucharest, the subway is the best transportation around the area. It is new and efficient even though it may sometimes be crowded; it still is more comfortable compared to other transport system in the area.
The subway system is structured to be simple so that visitors and tourist will not find it difficult to go to their desired destination. And aside from being very straightforward and accessible from many establishments, it is also a cheap way to travel around Bucharest. Tickets can be bought in the subway and discounts are offered for purchase of bulk tickets.
The second best way to get around the city is through busses and trams which are said also to be a comfortable ride and relatively new. However it is far more crowded compared to the subway and also experience heavy traffic, this is also one of the reasons why the subway is the best and fastest way to get around.
Busses are one of the best forms of transportation to leave the city. There are also trams and trolleys, but they are old and can be quite slow. While riding the trams and trolleys can be an interesting experience, it is not advisable if one is in a hurry. Tickets for both the busses and the trams can be obtained at the station kiosk.
For tourist or visitors who prefer to have their vehicle just in front of their hotel or any establishment instead of going to subway and train stations, riding a taxi or renting a private car is available in the city. Most taxi drivers are honest however it is much safer to call a taxi than to hail one on the street. When hailing a taxi prefer to ride in yellow ones since they are more reliable, yellow taxis also have their prices posted. When riding one make sure that the meter is functioning so there would be no problems. Taxi drivers tend to round up the bill that serves as their tip.
Though it does cost a lot of money, in Bucharest, car rental and limousine rental is available. If one chooses the luxury of a private car or limousine, all they have to do is call the travel agencies and car rental companies.
In Romania, kudos attaches to anyone owning a car. Congestion is often bad, particularly at rush hour; so going by car is not a good option for anyone in a hurry. Tourism by car is not advisable either. Public transport, especially the subway, is far preferable and much less stressful. For those wishing to experience all Bucharest has to offer, a combination of walking and using public transport is to be recommended.
